🌊🤿 DEEP DIVE: Keep your Apple Watch safe, so it can keep you safe maybe!

Your Apple Watch might be small, but it is powerful and stores a LOT of sensitive data that you want protected. We’ve created a simple Apple Watch safety checklist that will help you keep your device and data.

1. Check Your Passcode

Do you have a good passcode to protect your watch? Without one, anyone who picks up your watch can unlock it and access your private messages, health stats, and potentially even your bank information! If your watch is set to unlock your iPhone, then the risk is even more magnified, but easily fixed by setting a good passcode. Don’t forget that you can also unlock your Apple Watch with your iPhone if you’re worried about being inconvenienced. Do make sure to remember your passcode, but there are backup options if you ever forget it.

2. Turn On Find My

Don’t wait until you lose your watch to turn on Find My— a feature that lets you track the location of your watch whether it’s under the sofa or in another country. If your Apple Watch is ever lost or stolen, we have an article with steps to help you get it back. If you’ve misplaced your Apple Watch at home, learn how to use your iPhone to quickly ping it so that you can find it without a hassle.

3. Consider AppleCare Plus with Theft & Loss

Even with Find My, your Apple Watch might not be retrievable after it is lost or stolen. While every Apple device comes with a year of AppleCare, this doesn’t cover replacement unless you purchase AppleCare Plus and pay extra for Theft & Loss. This will also make repairs much more affordable because without insurance, the cost to repair even just the screen can be as much as just buying a new watch. It is best to get the plan when you originally purchase your watch, but you can reach out to Apple to see if you are still eligible. After several mishaps, I no longer purchase Apple Watches without the full AppleCare Plus insurance that includes potential theft and loss. Better safe than sorry!

4. Understand Your Apple Wallet

Is it safe to store credit cards and Apple Cash on your Apple Watch via Apple Wallet? Yes! But it is important to understand how it all works. Make sure you know how to make payments using your watch, how to change your default card on Apple Watch (it can differ from your iPhone), and how to use various cards and remove ones you no longer need from your Apple Wallet.

5. Use a Case & Secure Band

Another way to protect your device physically is to use an Apple Watch case/bumper and a band that is secure and won’t fall off without you noticing — yes, it can happen! Not every Apple Watch user will necessarily need a case, but if you take your watch on outdoor adventures, it can definitely help keep it scuff-free if you have one.

6. Personal Safety with Apple Watch

Your Apple Watch is loaded with features that can protect YOU, the wearer! Here is a list of features to explore if you want to make the most of your watch to stay safe:

  • Fall Detection alerts emergency services and your emergency contacts that you have fallen.
  • Crash Detection will get help if you experience a car crash.
  • Apple Watch Ultra siren can be heard from 600 feet away in case you need help.
  • Backtrack lets you retrace your steps if you are lost on a hike.
  • Apple Watch Emergency SOS can contact emergency services if you hold in the Side button.
  • Medical ID can be set up on your iPhone to make note of any important medical information and it is viewable on your watch without requiring a passcode to unlock it.
  • iPhone’s Check In feature can also be used on an Apple Watch to remind you to let your family know that you are safe while sharing your location only when you want it shared, for example, when you are on your way home after an outing or a late night run or hike.

🤔❓ READER QUESTIONS

You asked and we answered!

Q: If you are trying to track your daily activities, exercise, and also sleep, when is the best time to take off the watch to charge it? - Susan F.

A: Great question Susan! I use my Apple Watch practically 24/7 as well. I have a couple of suggestions. Personally, I have the Apple Watch Series 10 that charges super fast, so I plug it in for 40–45 minutes every morning while I enjoy my coffee and shower. My husband charges his Ultra 2 either while he reads before bed or he plugs it in in the car on his commute to work. If you only take short breaks throughout the day, try getting into the habit of charging it while you’re eating — not charging to 100% every time is best for battery life anyway! Just make sure to keep it on right after a workout so that your watch can track your recovery rates — a very important health metric.

🥇 CHECK YOUR TRIVIA ANSWER 🥇

The correct answer is: ❌ False

Neither Kindle nor Apple Books lets you read ebooks on your Watch. There are a few third-party apps that claim to let you do this, but why would you want to read a novel on your wrist?
